Great Day for “Autism in Love” with Lindsey and Dave at WUSA9
AUTISM IN LOVE examines the everyday realities of autistic adulthood as they cope with the challenge of keeping romance alive over the years.
Fresh off their honeymoon cruise, newlyweds Lindsey Nebeker and Dave Hamrick (featured in AUTISM IN LOVE were interviewed (link to segment) on WUSA9’s new morning show, Great Day Washington to talk about relationships, the autism spectrum and promote the Indie Lens Pop-Up preview screening of AUTISM IN LOVE at Busboys and Poets featuring thematic paired foods from the restaurant’s menu — Flourless Chocolate Cake and Vegan Parfait. This was the couple’s first LIVE interview. Prior to the documentary, they’ve appeared on a taped segment on Good Morning America.
Lindsey and Dave inspire everyone they’ve come in contact with their story about finding love and filming AUTISM IN LOVE. Young adults on the autism spectrum are finding this film encouraging about living independent lives and forming relationships. Parents of adult children coming of age on the spectrum have expressed a sense of hope and acceptance for their children.
During the Busboys and Poets preview screening of AUTISM IN LOVE in November, the servers and I (Michon, host) wore name badges using the Color Communications Badge system designed by the Autistic Self Advocacy Network (ASAN) to tell everyone who can see the color badge about the person’s communication preference in live settings. I provided materials for attendees at the event to create their own badges.
Note from Lindsey after the event:
The group appeared welcoming and it was fun to have the dessert pairings! I also liked how you included information on the social interaction badges. It was a nice gesture.
The restaurant manager kept the Badge information sheet as a professional development resource for the service and hosting staff at Busboys and Poets.
AUTISM IN LOVE will have its television premiere on the PBS series Independent Lens in January 2016. More Indie Lens Pop-Up events can be found at this link. Meet Lindsey and Dave at the Hill Center at the Old Naval Hospital for the Indie Lens Pop-Up preview of the film December 13. Make your reservation.
