Ep. 38 - Sanditon Sisterhood’s Victory for Fandom

Cast of SANDTION Seasons 1, 2 and 3

I know a lot of the SANDITON fans have made friends — there’s a lot of North America meetups. And we’ve seen pictures of groups meeting up in Australia and across Europe. And so yeah, I think that’s one of the big pluses out of the campaign besides the renewal.
— Juliet Creese, Sanditon Sisterhood (U.K.)
I think it’s a very special fandom. You know, I think it’s people who really sincerely love the stories and want to connect with people who have similar interests. And we’ve seen lots and lots of different friendships and different groups come together.
— Moni Sengupta, Sanditon Sisterhood (U.S.)

In Episode 38 we talk about the impact of fandom with JULIET CREESE and MONI SENGUPTA from the Sanditon Sisterhood Strategy Group. SANDITON was supposed to be gone for good when ITV in the U.K. canceled the series in its first season and before its U.S. premiere on PBS MASTERPIECE in 2020. But 7 women from 3 continents with the Sanditon Sisterhood fandom were determined not to let this series [inspired by Jane Austen’s unfinished novel] come to a sad ending. The Sanditon Sisterhood #SaveSanditon campaign helped restore SANDITON for two additional seasons. The 3rd and final season of SANDITON premiered on PBS MASTERPIECE in the U.S. in March 2023, and ITVx in the U.K. in August 2023.

Our SANDITON podcasts were the most popular episodes for Historical Drama with The Boston Sisters in 2023.

Juliet Creese and Moni Sengupta share the Sanditon Sisterhood Strategy Group’s strategies to rescue SANDITON, the friendships that grew out of the campaign, and whether SANDITON’s Rose, Georgiana, Esther and others got the Jane Austen ending fans were hoping for. [Spoiler Alert]

SANDITON is a co-production of PBS Masterpiece, Red Planet Pictures, and ITV

Stories from the Sanditon Sisterhood…a very special fandom

The Sanditon Sisterhood Strategy Group launched a crowdfunding campaign to raise money for a #SaveSanditon stunt on Brean Beach in Somerset (U.K.) in 2020. They commissioned Somerset snow artist Simon Beck to draw the characters Charlotte Heywood and Sidney Parker at Brean…something big that would get immediate attention. Juliet Creese was on hand to witness the event. Listen to the podcast for the story about the Sanditon sand art project. The Sanditon Sisterhood also made a video about it.

This page has been updated on 9/13/23. Episode #s are corrected. The actual crowdfunding platform for the sand art project was JustGiving (not GoFundMe).
